Canton: to take care of all foreigners...
- Chinese considered White as Guai Le : white devils.. worse than 야만인.
Macartney: wanted to normalize relations, have more trades.
- nowadays: something like FTAs or treaties, or even embassies..blahblah
Europeans looked at Chinese like Europeans (Germans, French)
- mass production/consumption and a big market is key in industrial imperialism, which China is a good candidate.
